Nata, tucked away in the far northern corner of Botswana, may seem like a destination too isolate to mission out to. It is, however, the exclusive location that makes Nata Lodge, an oasis set among the mokolwane palms, stand out It is there that you can you witness the true unspoilt beauty of raw nature.
Not far from this unassuming sanctuary lie the majestic Makgadikgadi Salt Pans. The sparse landscapes and utter remoteness may easily stun a visitor with its ghostly, eerie magnitude. The greater pans are expanses of salt landscape interspersed with sporadic bodies of water. There are a few shrubs here and there or the occasional palm-tree isle greeting a visitor with its unexpected presence.
The difference between the Makgadkgadi Salt Pans and the elephant rich Chobe or the vast, lush channels of the Okavango Delta is striking. Yet, there is something unreservedly mesmerizing about the Makgadikgadi. Jump on your vehicle and drive through the vast, seemingly never-ending saltpans only accompanied by the intermittent sight of meerkat, mongoose or flamingo if you’re lucky.
Your adventure will be rewarded with possibly one of the most fascinating sunsets you would have ever witnessed. Seeing the bright African sun disappear below the horizon in this indistinct, surreal setting in absolute silence is a dreamlike experience.
